Frankincense (also known as olibanum) is an aromatic resin used in incense and perfumes. It is obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia in the family Burseraceae. The word Frankincense is from Old French franc encens which translates into ‘high-quality incense’. There are five main species of Boswellia that produce true frankincense. Resin from each of the five is available in various grades, which depend on the time of harvesting. The resin is hand-sorted for quality.
Uses:
Frankincense has many different uses particularly in the perfume, food, and medicinal industries. It is used as incense, as a fumigation agent for religious purposes, and an agent in perfume making. It is used to make chewing gum and candy, it is added in toothpaste, and as a flavoring agent in some foods. It is also used in medicine due to it’s healing and anti-inflammatory qualities.
